The BEST Double-Date night EVER!!!!

It was a hot day in St George, mid-July. It was muggy due to the thunderstorm that had rolled in the night before, but nothing unusual for this time of year. We tried to sleep in, with little success which is always the case come Saturday morning. So we followed our normal routine of running, showering, dressing, eating and cleaning up around the house. We threw in a few sporting events on the television as well, I would say just to mix it up…but that too is a common occurrence around these parts. It was an ordinary day…or so we thought. What was about to happen was not at all normal, highly unusual and definitely not common for us four. We had no idea our Saturday, like every other Saturday, was going to turn out to be possibly the double date of a lifetime!
We met up with the Jones’s, Ryan and Shannon if you had forgotten, early in the evening. We had been planning for days to attend the Rocky Mountain Football League Championship game in which the Dixie Rebels, formally known as the Blitz, were playing against the Wasatch Revolution. I loaded my purse with candy, filled up my Maverick extra large cup full of ice cold water as I prepared to endure the humid heat. We arrived at the game in plenty of time to get a wide open second row seat right in the fifty yard line.

The game was entertaining, both teams very passionate about their efforts. Fights were a plenty and points were being scored on both ends of the field. The dark clouds once again came rolling in and the skies opened up with large rain drops upon us. With 7 minutes left in the fourth, the Dixie Rebels up 41-12, we left the ball field with plans to go to Chili’s for my all time favorite dessert the Paradise Pie.
Brent pulled out on to the Blvd, heading East, directly behind a large blue Chevy Tahoe. It was an older model with side panels and a more box shape than the newer year models. Brent noticed the driver was veering from lane to lane, aggressively changing speeds and erratically (as Shannon would say) driving up the road. As we followed him, not too closely, we could see that this driver was utterly intoxicated and a dangerous threat to anyone on the road. Shannon called 911 to report the driver as we continued to follow him and report his location to dispatch. The driver led us to the local Liquor Store, to no surprise where he exited his vehicle and stumbled aimlessly into the store. Brent circled his car getting a full description for dispatch who had suggested that we stay close to the driver until police could arrive at the scene. But moments later the man, carrying a brown paper bag that clearly held a large bottle of alcohol, came out of the store, got back into his car and drove out of the lot. We stayed close as instructed; police would need us to fill out an incident report. He pulled back onto the BLVD heading west. As we pulled in behind him a Campus Police officer turned in alongside of us and took the lead. He followed the driver at cars length for a few miles until two more officers approached from behind. Now on Sunset headed west the officer turned his light on to pull the driver over. The two police officers pulled in behind him. We pulled onto a side street to avoid being in the way of the pursuit. As two of the officers exited their vehicles to approach the driver he swerved back onto the road and sped down the street to evade his arrest. The police jumped back in their cars and the chase began. We flipped a U-ie and took off behind the high speed chase but unfortunately to stay safe ourselves we could not keep up and lost the cars in the dark of the night. As we came up to a major intersection on Sunset there was a lot of commotion in the parking lot, water spewing out of the ground, flooding the street below and multiple police cars and a fire truck surveying the scene.

It turns out the drunken driver tried to escape police by driving up on the curb, taking out a fire hydrant in the Lin’s parking lot and changing course down Dixie Drive…and it worked. They lost him.
Shannon filled out our incident report; the four of us signed it and gave our individual reports and descriptions to the officer in charge at the scene…A Caucasian male late 20’s, early 30’s, dark curly hair approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a white ball cap, white t-shirt, khaki cargo shorts with brown sandals.

After being eye-witnesses and giving all the information we could we set out on our own in pursuit of the criminal. We drove throughout the Dixie Downs area, in and out of side streets, up and down nearby roads but to no avail.
We called it a night; grabbed some Wendy’s and headed home for bed.
This morning we woke early, just another ordinary Sunday, to find that ten minutes after we too fled the scene the police arrested our intoxicated friend (who will remain anonymous for safety reason) and threw his sorry behind in the local jail.

Oh what a double date night!

That's our STORY and we are stickin to it!
