"In the summer of 1855 it would seem that Jacob Hamblin's brother 'Gunlock Bill' and Isaac Riddle were caring for the mission cattle. They might have been moving them gradually from winter to a summer range when one cow strayed away and could not be found. Isaac, like other good shepherds, left the herd to go in search of the lost one. He evidently slept in his saddle blankets or arose very early to follow her tracks, for he trailed her up the creek higher and higher into the hills when suddenly topping a hill he stopped and gazed in silent awe at the scene spread out before him. It was Sunday morning, and the sun was just sending her first rays over Gardner Peak where the cliffs in Forsyth Canyon caught and held the radiant light and the towering peak at the head of Lloyd Canyon loomed up into the clear blue sky like God's finger pointing the way. To use Isaac's own words, he said, "There stretching before me was the most beautiful sight I had ever beheld on God's green earth." Huge pines grew down to the floor of the valley which was carpeted with dew drenched grass waving as high as a horse's knees; quaking aspen bordered the creek on either side the full length of the valley.... The only sign of life in the whole valley was the lost cow peacefully grazing out in the virgin meadow, blissfully unconscious that she was making history...."Oh Yes this is Pine Valley.
But no one ever mentioned that is gets below freezing at 6:30 p.m. in the middle of October. We lasted about 20 minutes and then high tailed it outta there and headed home to Sunny St. George in the DESERT for DESSERT!!!

What a great history lesson for me this morning. Sorry it was so cold, but it is colder there, that's why people have a home in Pine Valley and one is St. George, so they have a place to go when it's boiling hot and another when it's freezing cold. It looks like you found a cute spot for your picnic. It was a wonderful idea but maybe August would have been better!! Oh well, when things are perfect the memories aren't quite so vivid.
Hey,
this is Kiney i saw your comment and iwould love to baby sit your kids i just have Y.M's on wednesday but other then that im totally free!!!
From Kinley
I would have been outta there too I don't like being that cold either. But it did look like you guys had a good time, even if it was a little chilly.
Love and Miss ya, JoLynn
Looks like fun! I have always wnated to see that place. I am sure Great Grandpa Jacob was smiling down on you!
Hey, Sorry it did not work out with Kinley tending tonight. I am sure she will be disappointed when I tell her, next time. I was just looking at your list of your friends who blog...I checked out Tosha and Eric Hintze's because I have a second cousin named Eric Hintze...sure enough it is him. Small world. How do you know him?
I dont know Tosha and I have not talked with Eric in years but that is funny...I knew sooner or later I would bump into someone who knew someone I knew in the blog world. Kinley would have loved to tend next friday but did you know it was Halloween? She has big plans of trick or treating with her friends from Cedar City....lets keep trying.
Your blog touched a soft spot in my heart. I had heard that story before but I was told that my Grandpa Jacob Hamblin along with his brother William were with the cattle moving them to a different pasture. And there were probably others with them.
when they discovered the cow gone Jacob sent his brother William to look for her. And he was the one who discovered Pine Valley. It really doesn't matter. Stories do get mixed up in the telling. When they returned to St George and told about the straight pine trees, that is where they went to get the pine trees for the lumber that went into the Temple. They had had a hard time finding trees straight enough for the lumber. When Jacob built his home in Santa Clara he got the logs from Pine Valley. If Brent hasn't been to Santa Clara to visit the home, see that he gets there Kami. He has an opportunity that most of my family has not had.. When I visited it and saw his saddle there, I rubbed my hand across the seat I could feel the imprint of his bady and it gave me chill bumps. He spent most of his life in the Church, in that saddle, as a Missionary to the Indians. There is a lot of Brent'heritage that took place in that area.
I remember when i visited Pine Valley I thought it was one of the most beautiful spots I had ever seen.
Love you all so much.
Grandma Helen
Beautiful, yes, but even Grandma Helen would have been high tailing it with you back to the desert... she's getting a little cold here in Denver. I have to keep reminding her not to wear such tight clothes.
